Nixie Clock IN-14 Steampunk. Lit JAN CWL 861 Military Tube. Ezekiel Rings

This clock is perhaps the pinnacle of Nixie clocks. It is certainly the most beautiful and rare clock I have made. Each element of the clock is handmade and thought out carefully to produce a truly unique piece. The star of this clock is a JAN CWL 861 tube.

JAN means Joint Army Navy meaning that this tube was probably built in the mid 1940s and used in military transmitters during the Second World War. It is possible to say that this tube was instrumental in the United States winning the war in the Pacific against Japan.

Research on this tube shows that it was used in most high power transmitters on ships and submarines. Ive read accounts of men who were radio operators pushing the output of these tubes till they were white hot while trying to communicate vital information between ships in the pacific and Pearl Harbor.

If you have an interest in early radio or WWII memorabilia this is the clock for you. If you own a JAN 860 tube that was a power doubler or tripplier for this tube which was the final output tube transmitting important information from ships and submarines during WWII.

The second picture in the list of photos shows a JAN 860 next to the 861 so you can see the size difference. This particular tube came from ham operator in Oak Brook Illinois. It was passed down to the man I bought it from and he was told it was from a WWII submarine.

This tube has a wonderful history! There are 12 RGBs in and around the tube that coupled with a beautiful repurposed wine box makes this a joy to behold. The tube with the rgbs create what I call the Ezekiel effect, wheels within wheels, a friend recently looked at the rings and counted at least 4 rings within rings. The photos dont really do justice to this clock. Handmade items are not perfect and this is no exception.

You can have a clock hand built in the USA from parts that are decades old but are new and being utilized for the first time in their lives. The clock has a battery backup that keeps time to + or - 1 minute a year. However from my observations I would say it is much more accurate than that. This is coming from a person who is a perfectionist and has CDO (thats OCD but in alphabetical order).

That level of obsessive precision goes into the building of your clock. The design is a 6 digit display that every minute if you wish will display the date for 5 seconds and then scroll back to the time. The only word that works for a description is COOL.

All the functions are set with one simple button. There are too many variations to describe here but be assured you can have this clock Your Way.

Tube life is lengthened by a blanking mode which you set when you are away and also an Anti Cathode Poisoning Feature that keeps the filaments clean and adds to the overall life of the tubes. Inspired by the SteamPunk movement Ive incorporated elements of copper and brass all handmade and unique to each clock. I treat our customers like I would want to be treated.
